DIY Holiday Makers - Why Putting Your Own Package Holiday Together May Not Be The Best Idea
Financial protection is normally of utmost importance for the British traveller, but many do not realise that if they book flights, accommodation and other parts of their trips independently, they are not automatically covered if things go wrong.
In 2006 the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) conducted a poll of 5000 holiday makers and found that more than 90% are aware of the need for financial protection. These people are buying flights and accommodation separately. Most transactions are made over the internet and in the case of any failure in service they have no protection. The CAA estimates that more than 18,000,000 British travellers will be buying and arranging their holidays in this way over the summer of 2007.
A third of the people who responded in the CAA survey incorrectly believed that a DIY holiday would be protected if any company, such as the airline, car hire company or hotel ceased to trade. A CAA spokesman said that many people didn’t realise that DIY holidays did not offer the same protection as traditional package holidays, even though there has been widespread coverage of such failures, such as the EuJet collapse in 2005. The only way to protect your self properly is by specialist travel insurance. Also, if items are paid for by credit card, then the card company will reimburse payments over £100 if the company ceases to trade. The only problem here is that the combination of services is not guaranteed, so for example if you can not make it to your destination because the airline goes out of business, you won’t necessarily get your money back on the hotel, just because you can’t get there.
